17 Feb Back to Business welcomes Alicia! Here’s her story about the best job ever
My choice to leave the workforce was circumstantial. After the birth of my daughter, I had mixed emotions about returning to work. We lived in Brooklyn and I was commuting over an hour into Manhattan every day, and frankly the cost of childcare was nearly equivalent to my take home pay. We relocated to Massachusetts soon after and I spent 3.5 years taking care of my child full time. Around this time, I began growing very antsy, watching some of my fellow stay-at-home moms return to work and feeling like my brain was stagnating. I was nervous to commit to anything as I still felt I wanted to be the primary caretaker for my daughter, but I knew I needed to figure out what I wanted to do with my future. I needed to figure out how to get on the right path so I would be ready to find a fulfilling career when my daughter started school. I noticed a recommendation for Back to Business on Facebook, and I sent an email to Linda that night. Linda called me the next day and when I spoke with her I was so comfortable. I made an appointment to start with the first step of her career service. She listened to my needs and suggested I might not yet need the whole process, since I wasn’t yet seeking to work full time. When we met we had an amazing conversation and I can honestly state I had a new level of confidence in my worth to the workforce. I also had an offer from Linda to start working for her business part-time! I accepted without hesitation and a month later I feel like a different person. I love “going to the office” even for just a dozen or so hours per week. And I love being part of an organization in which I can see on a daily basis the positive impact on the lives of clients.
